Maharashtra Board SSC (Class 10) Science Part 2 Chapter 6 Animal Classification

1. I am diploblastic &acoelomate. Which phylum do I belong to? Identify me.

Answer: I am diploblastic &acoelomate. Both the characteristics are seen in phylum Coelenterata/Cnidaria. Examples of this phylum are jellyfish and also red coral.

2. What is a bath sponge?

Answer: A black coloured and somewhat round-shaped animal is a bath sponge with a body, mainly made of fibres of a protein- sponging. Due to this, these organisms have good water-holding capacity and so were used for bathing during the old days. Other than this, it was also used for making pillows and cushions. These were also used as wetting material for sticking postal stamps and counting the currency notes. Animals with the simplest body plan and called ‘Sponges’ reproduce by budding, an asexual method and / or by sexual method. Besides, they have good regeneration ability.

3. What is animal classification?

Answer: Forming groups and sub-groups of animals as per their similarities and differences among animals is called animal classification.

4. What are the benefits of animal classification?

Answer: The benefits of animal classification are given below:

2. Studying a few animals from a group helps to understand about that entire animal group

3. Gives an idea about animal evolution

4. Identify Animals with great accuracy

5. Helps to understand the relationship of animals with other living organisms

5. What are the characters of chordates?

Answer: Chordates have supported notochords in their body . All chordates are included in the same phylum.

The phylum Chordata is classified into three subphyla-Urochordata,Cephalochordata and Vertebrata/Craniata. Meanwhile, the characters of chordates are below:

  • Notochord supports the Body
  • They have Pharyngeal gill-slits or lungs to be used for respiration
  • Hollow nerve cord is present on the dorsal side of the body
  • Heart is found on the ventral side of the body

6. What is the ‘Tissue-Organ grade’ organization?

Answer : Examples for ‘Tissue-Organ grade’ organizations are Flatworms. In this organisation, even if the tissues are organized to form some organs, complete organ systems are not formed.

7. What is Radial symmetry?

Answer: If an imaginary cut passes through the central axis but any plane of the body, it gives two equal halves in Radial Symmetry. Example is Star fish. This animal has five different planes passing through the central axis of its body through which we can get two equal halves.

8. Write short notes about Phylum –Platyhelminthes.

Answer: These animals have slender body, flat like a leaf or strip. Known as ‘flatworms,’ these animals are endoparasites, while few of them are free-living and aquatic. They have acoelomate and bilaterally symmetrical body. These organisms are also triploblastic with their body made up of three germ layers- endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm. They are hermaphrodites with both the male and female reproductive systems present in the same animal body. Examples include Planaria, Liverfluke, Tapeworm and so on.
